1887. NC State was established with the idea that college shouldn't be reserved for a select few. Its founders believed the children of farmers, mechanics and other workers should have access to the benefits of higher education, too.
North Carolina State University (NCSU) began in 1887 in West Raleigh as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. As the two locales evolved separately and as their differing geographies and inhabitants steered contrasting courses, calls for a formal split emerged. In 1712, North Carolina and South Carolina became distinct colonies. Each prospered in its own right after this peaceful divorce took effect.
On June 24, 1664, James, Duke of York, granted Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, ownership of a swath of land between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. The charter referred to these lands as “New Jersey” in honor of Carteret's defense of the English Channel island of Jersey during the English Civil War.

Unofficially, 2.0 is the lowest GPA accepted into a standard college, so while there's a chance that college admission is possible, it's not likely at more than a few institutions.

When did NC State admit black students?
NC State's first Black undergraduates — including Irwin Holmes, the university's first Black graduate — were admitted 17 years later, in 1956. Today, we have nearly 2,000 Black staff and faculty members, and the Black Alumni Society has around 15,000 active members.
Our campus stretches across more than 2,000 acres today, but it all began in one building: Holladay Hall. NC State's original home opened its doors in 1889. The structure, named after the university's first president, was built from more than 1.2 million bricks and had no electricity or running water.

About the 'First in Freedom' Plate
Designed by license plate collector and North Carolina historian Charles Robinson, the "First in Freedom" plate design recognizes two important events: the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775, and the Halifax Resolves on April 12, 1776.
The distance between the two North Carolina settlements and South Carolina's Charles Town caused the Lords Proprietors decide to split the two areas. In 1712, there was officially one governor for all of Carolina, but an additional deputy governor for the north, creating North and South Carolina.
While African-American students were admitted to NC State in the 1950s, parts of the campus and most of Raleigh were segregated. Resident halls were segregated, so Liston and Clemons did not live on campus.
On March 30th, 1955, the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Pupil Assignment Act, a law that delayed integration by shifting the responsibility of desegregation from the state to local school boards. It also removed any references to race in all school laws.
